"So it must have been a pretty exciting moment," I said to Tim Hallam.
We were standing under the basket in the minutes before the Atlanta Hawks game; Hallam had just returned from Philadelphia where Jordan had, indeed, scored his fifteen thousanth career point, right on schedule.

"I suppose it was exciting, but I was kind of bummed", Hallam said.
"You were ?" I said.  "Why ?"
"Because it came on a free throw," he said.  "Screws up my highlight film for next year."
John Diamond,  Hallam's young assistant, said, "Ninety-nine and oh-one were so good."
Meaning : Jordan had made a picturesque shot from the field to score points number 14,998 and 14,999; he had made another gorgious field goal that resulted in points number 15,001 and 15,002.  But point 15,000 had come on a free throw - thus it would look boring on film, and probably wouldn't even be included on the season sum-up highlights reel that the Bulls front office prepared for promotional use.
"Pretty inconsiderate of him," I said.
"I mentioned it to him on the plane," Hallam said, laughing.   "He was very apologetic."
